SUMMARY

Alaa Eddine Aljem began his cinema career with short films, his first feature film The Unknown Saint was chosen for the Locarno Film Festival project development platform Open Doors Lab where it won an award and premiered at Semaine de la Critique at Cannes Film Festival. Moroccan director Aljem, introduces us to an absurd story about the greediness in today’s world. Amine steals a large amount of money and runs to the mountains while police chase behind her. Just before she gets arrested, she digs a grave to bury the money. Years later, Amine is released from prison and sets off to find the money. What she sees when she gets back is a mausoleum. The mausoleum was built in the name of a newly discovered unknown Saint. Right below the mausoleum of “The Unknown Saint” is a small town where visitors could stay. Amine settles in this town and tries to figure out ways to get in. Now that the money is inside a mausoleum, things get harder for Amine.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Trained at ESAV Marrakech and INSAS in Brussels, Alaa Eddine Aljem directed several short films, among them ‘The Desert Fish’ (2015), which gained great acclaim in the film festival circuit and took the Critics, Screenwriting and Grand Prize at the Moroccan National Film Festival. ‘The Unknown Saint’ is Aljem’s debut feature. With this project, Aljem participated in the Open Doors Lab at the Locarno Festival, where it won the ICAM award. Aljem also took part in La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde in Cannes in 2016, and in the Sundance Screenwriters’ Lab. In 2016, Alaa was named by ‘Screen International’ as one the Five Arab Stars of Tomorrow.
