"We wanted to remain open to the material we had in the most uninhibited way possible, which meant suspending judgement completely." Dean Fleischer-Camp (Director)

SUMMARY

What starts as the tale of an ordinary American family, posted on YouTube, takes a strange and thrilling turn in this controversial documentary.

Like millions of people worldwide, Gary enjoys documenting his home life. Whether his wife and two kids are opening a new iPhone, visiting the mall or taking a trip to New York, his camera is ever-present, capturing the little moments of joy and everything that happens in between them. At first, this appears to be what the film is about. Soon, however, a twisted side to the family begins to emerge, as they sink into massive debt and come up with an audacious plan to get out of it. Director Dean Fleischer-Camp stumbled on Gary's account on YouTube and spent some years mulling over how to turn it into a documentary, before arriving at the brilliant premise for Fraud. It premiered this year at Toronto's Hot Docs festival and sparked a hot debate. However you feel about it, the film will stretch your understanding of the possibilities of documentary.
