It's London during the 40s. The Germans are bombing the city every night, and people head for the shelters. Spirits are low. Catrin is a smart young Welsh woman with a shaky self-confidence. She gets hired by the Ministry of Intelligence to work in the making of the propaganda films that try to spread optimism and chauvinism. Her main duty is to write "pulp" dialogues for women; her first assignment, to investigate the story of two sisters who saved soldiers from a sinking vessel off the shores of Dunkirk in their alcoholic father's boat. Lone Scherfig once again comes up with a female character who cautiously but decisively follows her own course, this time in war, among many men unaware of her powers. Their Finest can also be seen as a romantic comedy between Catrin and the two men attracted to her. But more truly it is a love letter to cinema, one that shows the power of stories to transform their viewers when they genuinely reflect women's views, hearts and souls.

Lone Scherfig was born in 1959 in Denmark. She studied at the Danish Film School. Scherfig's films Italian for Beginners (2000), Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself (2002), Just Like Home (2007), An Education (2009), and The Riot Club (2014) were all screened at international film festivals. Their Finest (2016) is her latest film.
